Providing scalable on-demand interactive video service by means of multicasting and client buffering

چکیده
True-VOD provides interactive on-demand (i.e., virtually zero start-up delay) video service by allocating each user a dedicated stream. Such streaming technique, however, cannot scale up to accommodate a large number of users. A more scalable solution is to use multicasting and client buffering. In this paper, we propose a client-initiated (client-pull) on-demand scheme in which short unicast streams are used to “merge” users onto the existing multicast streams by means of pre-buffering. The scheme is observed to trade off some bandwidth with lower buffer requirement as compared with a previously proposed scheme. We then propose and analyze a server-initiated (server-push) scheme for on-demand interactive applications. The scheme is shown to offer service level similar to true-VOD with substantially (many times) lower bandwidth, even with high user interactivity (e.g., averaged ten VCR commands/viewing). Providing Interactive Video on Demand Services in Distributed Architecture
True VoD systems provide interactive on-demand video service by allocating each client a dedicated stream. Such a scheme is inefficient when the system has a large number of users. A more scalable solution is to use a combination of multicast and unicast channels with client buffering. The present paper shows the design of a VoD proxy server that accepts interactive commands from the users usin...
متن کاملVideo-on-Demand Broadcasting Protocols: a Comprehensive Study
Broadcasting protocols are proved to be efficient for transmitting most of the popular videos in video-on-demand systems. We propose a generalized analytical approach to evaluate the efficiency of the broadcasting protocols and derive the theoretical lower bandwidth requirement bound for any periodic broadcasting protocols. By means of the proposed analytical tool temporal-bandwidth map, the ap...
متن کاملA Scalable Technique for VCR-Like Interactions in Video-on-Demand Applications
In video-on-demand (VOD) applications, it is desirable to provide the user with the video-cassette-recorder-like (VCR) capabilities such as fast-forwarding a video or jumping to a specific frame. We address this issue in the broadcast framework, where each video is broadcast repeatedly on the network. Existing techniques rely on data prefetching as the mechanism to provide this functionality. T...
متن کاملLow-cost, scalable TV/video on-demand distribution over Telco networks
With the proliferation of IP networking and wireless access, local exchange carriers (LEC) are under tremendous pressure to evolve into broadband service providers. On-demand video distribution to the mass appears to be one of the best evolution paths for the LEC. Various approaches for providing on-demand content/video distribution to massive viewers are compared. In particular, a novel low-co...
متن کاملScalable Video on Demand - Adaptive Internet-based Distribution
Description: In recent years, the proliferation of available video content and the popularity of the Internet have encouraged service providers to develop new ways of distributing content to clients. Increasing video scaling ratios and advanced digital signal processing techniques have led to Internet Video-on-Demand applications, but these currently lack efficiency and quality. Scalable Video ...
